Irish dance can get expensive, especially after you add in all the little things – like make up! Sara at Rince Go Bragh did a post on ways to cut Irish dance costs. Another way is to make your own make up. To give you some ideas on how to create your own mineral make up, I’ve teamed up with Clare Jeffcock!
Clare’s been making mineral make up for quite some time and has some great advice. In addition to dancing and making makeup, Clare’s also trying to go to Ireland with her dance friends to study at the University of Limerick’s Blas Summer School for Irish Music and Dance. Check out their Facebook page and website to help them out!
Today, we continue the series with Lip Balm! Check out the previous recipes for mineral blush. Check back later in the week for lip balm, eye shadow, eye liner and more!
Apricot Kernel Oil – http://www.mountainroseherbs.com/bulkoil/a-c.html
Candelilla Wax (Beeswax can also be used, but I personally prefer not to use it because it’s an animal byproduct.) – http://www.mountainroseherbs.com/wax/wax.html
Cosmetic Mica – OPTIONAL (any of the following can be used, and more, but these are my personal faves!):

Lip Balm Tubes – http://www.specialtybottle.com/lipbalmtube15ozwcap.aspx
Glass microwave-safe container, preferably a jug
Uncap the lip balm tubes and make them ready for filling. Do not skip this step!!!
Melt a bit of the wax on half power in the microwave. Once it’s melted, add a bit of the apricot kernel oil and return it to the microwave for a few seconds. Stir it well and take the spoon out.
Now, trust me here: stick the wax-covered spoon into the freezer for a minute or so. Take it out and check to see if you like the consistency of the lip balm. If you do, continue, if you don’t, add more oil or wax and return the mixture to the microwave.
Once it’s at the consistency you like, add a tiny bit of mica and stir. If you want to, add more to reach your desired colour.
Once you like the colour, pour the mixture into the lip balm tubes. Cap them and put them in a cool place and leave them until there is no trace of warmth when you touch them.
Stay tuned for more make up recipes! What do you think? Has anyone else made their own make up? Excited to try?
